Lover's Lane

Authors: Jill Marie Landis and Sandra Burr
Average review score:

A strong engaging relationship drama
In 1997 Borrego Springs, California, lawyer Arthur Litton offers a million dollars to buy baby Christopher for his clients, the child's grandparents. The father of the child, their son Rick recently died. Caroline Graham knows she cannot win a court battle against the wealthy Saunders so she disappears with her child.

Six years later, private investigator Jake Montgomery thinks he has found the vanished son of his deceased buddy Rick. Jake travels to Starlight Cove to meet painter Carly Nolan, single mother of six year old Christopher. Upon seeing her resemblance to a photo that Rick gave him of his fiancée, Jake concludes he has found Caroline. Jake knows reporting this would make his firm, but waits because he wants to do the right thing by Rick.

Jake introduces himself to Carly at the gallery. She finds him attractive, but fears any relationship might expose her and Chris. Jake is surprised by her vulnerability, but believes the guilty run and hide. He wonders if Chris might be better off with his widowed wealthy grandmother. As he begins to fall in love, his actions expose Carly and Chris.

This is a strong engaging relationship drama that hooks the reader from the start through a fully developed secondary cast supplementing the prime plot. Carly is a delightful protagonist living in fear, yet braving everything thrown at her. Jake seems too perfect as he seeks a middle ground between the woman he loves and the mother of his deceased best friend. Readers will appreciate this robust family drama.

Meditations from the Breakdown Lane: Running Across America
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Co (Pap) (April, 1983)
Author: James E. Shapiro

Senses at attention...
Mr. Shapiro is a storyteller. The journey runner Bob Dylan. Slick Rick. Johnny Cash. His words captivate and affect. Brush strokes drawn from the experiencial pallete of a colorful character, they allow others to accompany him on a journey of self-exploration and realization. Having had the good fortune of knowing Mr. Shapiro - he was my grade school teacher, cross-country and track coach and remains my friend and mentor - I expected something deep and real from the record of his transcon run. As usual the modest poet and philosopher left me marveling at his feats of body and mind, inspired to rise to my own. Beauty at its essence, Meditations is like a clear pool on an overcast day. If you look at it long enough you will see not only the surface but what lies beneath. Look again and you may find that you too are dancing with the soft water. I highly recommend Meditations From the Breakdown Lane to any and all.

Excellent account of a transcon run
I have read Shapiro's book several times. It details the very dispute that goes through his head as he runs 40+ miles per day from Coast to Coast. His book helped inspire me to run across the country as well and his words were with me each day. An excellent book well worth finding.

The Midnight Horse
This book is about a girl who loves the horse named Midnight. He is special because he is very calm and gentle. She was very sad bacause he was being sold to a different family, and she did not want that to happen. He was not her horse and her parents would not let her have him. This is the story of how she got the pony.

Midnight Horse
I thought this was a great book. It is the 4th book of Sandy Lane Stables. I think this is a good book for girls and boys that love horses. The Midnight horse was the best book I thought. I hope that you love reading it I could not stop reading.

The Money Workbook

POWERFUL experience-Give yourself the life you want now!
This book will take you on a 30 day exploration of your life and how you work it. Follow the directions in using the book and you will become aware of patterns and beliefs that run through your life. Liberating new approaches are discovered through this process. An Amazing book-very powerful!

We get to really see how we operate, then get to change it.
The simple, straight-forward approach of Dr. Lane's Money Workbook actually disguises its unusually powerful potential to transform. My initial "I already know this stuff" reaction was soon dissolved in the realization that it's not about "knowing;" it's about experiencing. Dr. Lane's daily exercises (30 in all) guide us through the experience of how we operate in our life, and then allow us to face that truth honestly, decide how we would like our life to be, and take steps to create it that way. This book is a no-nonsense guide that empowers us to create our lives in ways that work for us -- and it's fun, too.

Natural Limits to Biological Change
Published in Paperback by Zondervan (September, 1984)
Authors: Lane Lester and Ray G. Bohlin
Average review score:

Great book
This book takes an in-depth lookat genetic variation found in nature. The authors examine the evidence from all the different sides, compare the different theories on the issue, e.g, Darwinism, Punctuated Equilbrium, and Creation. I have read books and articles on this subject from Mayr, Gould, Stanley, Mendel, and others. This book ranks right up there in quality. Moreover it is even better in same cases as it doesn't push its dogma down your throat like some others do, but allows the reader to make up his own mind.

Take a look at this book if you have ever had any questions about speciation or biological variaiton. You may find this book hard to get a hold of but it is well worth it. Definite 5 star book.

Good book, very technical
This book was a good defense against both Darwinism and punctuated equilibrium. This was the first book I read on the subject of evolution, and although it was a bit technical, it was very explanatory. It is a good book to give to your biology professor or someone who wants a good defense of creationism without unscientific remarks. It was written by two very qualified doctorates in biology and genetics. I would like to see an evolutionist try and analyze this book for its "unscientific" behavior, which many evolutionists claim against creationists.

Put One in Your Glove Compartment
I do book reviews for an integrated healthcare system in Austin, TX. and found this book through it's publisher. Of course it is great for our diabetes education division whom I have forwarded it to, but it is also useful for anyone who wants to be intentional about eating in a healthy way.

Fast Lane is easy to use, and easy to incorporate in your overall nutrition plan. We are surrounded by fast food. When you pay attention to the menu you can go out without sabotaging your own best intentions. This slim little book is a great tool.

An Indispensible Guidebook
For anyone who counts calories, cholesterol, or carbohydrates, this is a fantastic source of information about the fast food we all eat so often. My child is diabetic, and this book is so helpful for "counting the carbs" in her diet.

The Paper Door and Other Stories
Published in Hardcover by Farrar Straus & Giroux (March, 1987)
Authors: Shiga Naoya, Lane Dunlop, Lane Dunlap, and Naoya Shiga
Average review score:

Talking flowers, gourds, and sushi
I was first introduced to the works of Naoya Shiga when I read his wonderful novel _A Dark Night's Passing_. Shiga's short stories are just as interesting as his longer works. The stories in this book stretch a long period of time from 1904 until 1945. Shiga, although considered one of the top modern japanese writers, is famous for the small amount of writting that he produced in his very long life. My favorites in the book are "The Razor," "Seibei and his Gourds," "The House by the Moat, and "Kuniko."

Without going into detail about each story. Several themes pop up in the stories: death, lonliness, unfaithfulness, among others. But the thing that struck me the hardest was the male's view of women. The stories "A Memory of Yamashina," Infatuatio," and "Kuniko" really show this very well. In the first two a husband who has been caught having an affair makes his wife feel guilty because she fell in love with her doctor. She never had physical relations with him, but the husband thought that was enough to excuse his affair. "Kuniko" must be read to be believed. Good book check it out.

LIFE AS IT IS.
The book I enjoyed the most in Japanese. SHIGA is unlike other famous Japanese writers such as Mishima or Dazai. If their works are like roses, his is much like Morning Glory. His style is more simple. Yet beautiful. It is like a piece of art. Just reading a sentence and you can actually "see" it in your head... Unfortunately there were some parts mistranslated in this book.

A Wonderful and Exciting Book!

Puzzle and Alex become very attatched to each other.

Meanwhile, he hasn't exactly told his parents about Puzzle yet. When his parents do find out, that are angry and tell him he has to sell Puzzle. Alex is heartbroken. Puzzle is so special to him now. No one at the stable wants to see the little horse go, but maybe that's not enough. Will Alex have to courage to say good bye to Puzzle- forever?

Chevara's Review
Alex Hardy needs to raise money for a cricket tour that he desperately wants to go on. He has to raise GBP850-00 and all three ponies at the stables are lame. He thinks he has the perfect solution but he soon finds that he has let himself in for a whole lot more than he bargained for. Read the book to find out how Alex manages to resolve the problems. A very exciting book.

an essential dramatist
as fine a writer as england has produced since the second world war. these plays represent bond simply and completely, as a man of passion and vision and a writer that any reader or writer MUST reckon with if they wish to have an understanding of modern drama. genius, and handed out when the word is knowingly overused. here it is earned.

A social dramatist with insight into modern society.
If you are considering the plays of Bond there is no better place to start than here, at the beginning of his career. This volume contains his first three plays. Whether you have seen thse works performed or not is irrelevant. Just reading them is an interesting experience. This is essential modern literature! Bond's introductions (to all the volumes of his collected plays) are also essential. They have a socialist leaning but are not too preachy. Bond's self-educated working-class position gives his articulate essays a powerful punch. (A punch modern society needs.) I would buy these volumes just for these introductions, they are that good!

After this, go on to PLAYS:TWO for the brilliant LEAR.

Primus Anthology a Thru N: For Guitar and Bass
Published in Paperback by Hal Leonard (June, 2000)
Authors: Cherry Lane Music and Whaley
Average review score:

Great! Now why didn't they do this about 10 years ago?
Cherry Lane has now released transcriptions of the "Progressive Freak-Out Music" band Primus, divided alphabetically by song title into two volumes. (For those who didn't know, Cherry Lane published many other transcription books and instructional videos during the late 80's shred-guitar era.) Each song transcription includes the guitar lines and bass parts in both standard notation and tablature, as well as the lyrics and vocal melody. A time line of the band's history is included each book. Everything, note-for-note, is taken straight from the original albums. Though being a bass player, I mainly bought these books for the bass parts.

I was very, very pleased to see them feature many songs from the first two albums. Songs like "John The Fisherman", "Jerry Was A Race Car Driver", and "Tommy The Cat" were the ones that introduced me to Primus, and really intrigued me to sit down and learn how to play Claypool's parts. Though maybe some of the newer fans will be disappointed that the books do not include the South Park theme, or songs from the last couple of albums. Nevertheless, the thumb-slapping technique became extremely popular again for bassists around the early 90s, and Les Claypool (along with Flea, Robert Trujilio, etc.) had a lot to do with that. This brings me to the title of this review: why the heck they didn't print a Primus bass transcription book back then, when such a thing would be in its highest demand?

Les also used a variety of basses, including a 4-string with a whammy bar, 6-string basses, uprights, and fretlesses. He also used a variety of techniques other than slapping, such as left and right hand tapping, strumming, and three finger picking. But all the transcriptions seemed to have been faithfully done. (Though I did find tablature to be an odd inclusion for songs like Mr. Krinkle, which features a bowed upright bass! Where is this "third fret" he's supposedly hitting?) The only other thing I find odd is the lack of drum transcriptions. I like Larry Lalonde's guitar style, but let's face it: Primus is mostly known amongst musicians as a "bassist's and drummer's" band. Though maybe drummers aren't that big into transcriptions; I don't know.

I buy transcription books very rarely, but this is one that I've really been waiting for. That's probably what pushes me to give it 5 stars instead of 4. Sitting down with these books and my bass has been fun, a bit nostalgic, and challenging.

Finally, a look into the world of les claypool
This book is a much needed explination of the insanity of Les Claypool's bass style. His slap bass style with bits of tapping, usually on a 5 string bass, occasionally fretless. I have been trying for years to decifer les's music, and now it's finally possible. worth every penny and every second of practice. This is perfect for any primus fan who is instrumental, but be warned, Les' music "is!" as hard to play as it sounds. Have fun.
